Enjoy four nights at a lodge on the banks of the Zambezi river in Zimbabwe, where there’s the chance to visit Victoria Falls (three miles away), go kayaking and white-water rafting and see elephants, before heading off on a three-night safari. HOW TO KEEP SAFARI COSTS DOWN 

• October to December is the partially rainy season in East Africa when prices can be lower - although rain is only brief, coming in short bursts.
• Buy mosquito repellent and suntan lotion in Britain - it’s usually a lot cheaper.
• Take your own booze: while meals are normally included at lodges, alcohol isn’t and can be extortionate.
• If you want a good guidebook to the animals/birds, buy before you go as they may be in short supply.
• Always use wifi at lodges to get on the internet - roaming charges are often sky high.
